From council tax support to free school meals, many benefits go unclaimed simply because people do not know they exist. Here are six to check today.
Council Tax Support
If you are on a low income or claiming certain benefits, you may be entitled to a reduction on your council tax bill. Some councils offer up to 100% off. Each council runs its own scheme, so contact your local council or check their website to see what you could claim.
Check your councilFree School Meals
If you receive certain benefits, your children may be entitled to free school meals. This can save a family hundreds of pounds per child each year. Eligibility varies by location, so check with your local council or your child's school.
Healthy Start Vouchers
If you are more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under 4, and you or your family receive certain benefits, you could get Healthy Start vouchers. These can be spent on milk, fruit, vegetables, and infant formula, and are worth up to £8.40 per week.
WaterSure Scheme
If you are on a water meter and receive certain benefits or tax credits, and have a large family or a medical condition requiring extra water, you may qualify for the WaterSure scheme. This caps your water bill at an average amount, potentially saving you hundreds.
Warm Home Discount
This scheme provides a one-off discount on your electricity bill between October and March. If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or are on a low income, you may be eligible. The discount is usually applied directly to your bill.
Carer's Allowance
If you spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone with substantial needs, you may be entitled to Carer's Allowance. This is worth over £3000 a year and does not depend on your savings. Many carers do not realise they qualify, so it is worth checking.
